How to Manage Your Diabetes without Spending a Fortune

When you get that diabetes diagnosis, you’re probably in shock. You’re already thinking about how you’ll have to change your lifestyle to take care of yourself in light of the news – but you may not yet be thinking how much more costly things might be as well. Healthy food is, sadly, often more expensive than junk food. Doctor visits and medications add up. Luckily, there are some things you can do to keep the costs under control.

Find the Right Doctor

Schedule your diabetes follow-up appointments with a clinic that specializes in adult medicine and in conditions such as diabetes. Smaller primary care clinics are able to offer better deals on doctor visits than doctors beholden to large medical facilities.

Become a Bargain Hunter

Fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods may cost more than processed snacks, but your health is worth it. Cut coupons and watch sale flyers. Grab whatever fresh produce is on sale and freeze the excess. If fresh produce is out of season, buy frozen.
Since you’ll be going more often to monitor your diabetes, it makes sense to visit a quality doctor who charges less at the same time that you become a bargain hunter who only buys healthy food on sale. Also, ask the clinic about payment plans and financial aid if your insurance doesn’t cover the entirety of your visit.
